According to my reply its not much wider either, millimeters is a relatively common unit of measurement. 10mm is less than a half inch, meaning less than 1/4" on each side.

but keep in mind not every tire is the same. 225 on one tire may be more like 215 on another tire. My old Falken Azenis in 205 were wider than some peoples 215's

You are right to an extent, a millimeter is a millimeter, but depending on how much the tire is stretched and what lateral forces are put on it, the sidewall can bulge beyond the tread width measurement. The only true test of fitment is mounting the tire, but you can get a pretty damn good idea from the numbers.

Find the brand of tires you want, and measure them at the dealers,
that's the best way. Normally, if you go wider, go down
on profile number, if you are concerned about height.
50's are taller than 40's.

Some people only know how to look up pure stock specs
from their book. If some counter guys resist your measuring,
there are many tire dealers.-Bob

225/50/17 (set up on rims I may trade for, same backspacing as my rims)

Measure around the tire, figure the % difference.
Your particuler speedo will be *reading* faster than
you are really going by that %.

............better than tires that are too tall, and get you tickets.-Bob
