what happens when you rev it in neutral with the hood shut?

Sometimes detonation only occurs under a load, as in when your speeding up.

Hmmm. Try a higher octane fuel and see if it goes away? It just sounds way to high a frequency to be detonation. It sounds like if someone had a nut or a quarter on the valve cover vibrating...

It's hard to know without hearing the noise. If it still has a warranty, I would take it to the dealer.

detonation IS a high frequency. The easiest way to tell if thats it is pull all the plugs and study them closely-Detonation will show small black specks all over the ceramic.

Could be-bad injector, cam sensor, ecu firing plug to soon, yadayadayada.

Post up pics of the plug and ill tell you whatsagoinon.

your transfercase shouldnt make any noise other than maybe a small whine, you probably have a heat shield hitting the case.
