What I've learned
Organize/keep track of everything you take off.
Dont get rid of factory parts you might need them later when something breaks.
Extensions and flex joints are your friend when using wratchets.
Dont use a standard socket when the bolt is metric/ vise-versa, no matter how close the fit seems.
Having a bench/large table to work off of is very helpfull and makes it easier to keep track of parts that you take off/ put on.
always use jackstands when working under a car.
Wear Eye protection when under the car, because dirt falling into the eyes is the worst.
People with lots of tools make good friend, but respect their tools and give them lots of beer in exchange for their use. especially when its family members with the tools.
Thats what ive learned in the few short years ive been working on cars.

air tools are for tough jobs, not for smaller nuts/bolts like valve covers and such.
never trust a tire shop to properly torque your lug nuts. If you didn't see them do it, check it yourself.
Don't use air guns on lug nuts without threading them 3-5 turns first, but preferably just do it by hand.
The fastest way to lose a good tool is to think to yourself "I'll put it away later"
-when underneath the car DO NOT trust the guy working above you not to drop tools and or fluid on you.
-duct tape should but doesnt fix everything

+1 for air tools and knowing when and when not to use them.
Checking fluids often is always a good thing.
Dont buy used parts that are designed to wear out. I.E brake pads and rotors clutches ect ect.
always keep spare fuses/flashlight/tire pressure meter (and if possible a small road side kit with the basic tools) in the car just in case.
When working on motor parts with designated tourque specs, always use a tourque wrench because what you think is tight never is.
When working on parts with aluminum threads always take care in tightening especially if there if you dont know the TQ specs, because heli-coils are expensive.
If you drive an older car, and drive decent distances weekly, keep a quart or 2 of oil somewhere in the car because every older car burns/leaks oil more than a newer no matter what you think.
When possible sign your ass up for AAA because sooner or later you will need it.
few things i remeberd, and I have had experience with everything ive posted
