Red face le mans series racing.--what does it take??

kicks ass.

I really want to be a GT or GT2 driver. I mean, imagine driving a porsche or ferrari at the speeds they were made to be driven. and NOT getting a ticket

anyone know what it takes to become a driver??

I'm serious. I know you'd have to build a rep on the drag strip, and then the circle tracks... or maybe just the circle tracks..

I just don't have the money to get hold of a porsche. and yeah, i know that I myself wouldn't have to be the owner of it, because there would be a team and sponsors.

Anyway, I believe i'm a wonderful driver. all of my friends would say "yes" if you asked them if i could be a criminal getaway driver, or transporter like james statham in the transporter.

i know i'd have to go to plenty of driving and racing schools.. but i stil believe that i can be whatever I want to be.

anyway, no bashing please, just honesty if you know what it takes to gain the oppurtunity. thanks.

otherwise, i'll just have to stick to celebration station racing the go karts all day everyday that's how much i love driving and racing. or maybe just Sunshine.

Just rememer there will always be ups and downs and it takes heart and courage to do this. If you belive in yourself then you can do anything..But my best bet for you is for you to search the web study some of the drivers see there backrounds there roots how they got in to it ,what it took for them to be where there at today!!!thats just my .02 cents! Good luck bro

If you want to do sports cars, you need to climb the ranks; probably carting, some SCCA and so on. No roundy round racing is going to help you negotiate a road coarse. Ask some of the guys in the road racing forum.

SCCA events/vintage racing/carting/some sort of road racing experience, and lots of money and experience.

also getting a seat in a feader series would be really helpful

Sell everything you own.
Buy a truck and a dedicated track car or kart.
Start tracking.
Start competing.
Win races.

Dragracing won't do anything for your gt resume'. And ovals not much more.

You need track time and lots of it. You think you're good but if you have never done it then you suck. That's reality.

As Chuck said, drag/circle track experience won't do you a damn bit of good. Also, if you think being a 'good driver' on the street is anything like being wheel to wheel at triple digit speeds...you're going to be seriously suprised.

Attend a Skip Barber 3day racing school, then maybe do the Formula Barber series, which will cost you around $30k for 1 season. If you do well, you can try something like Formula Ford 2000 or Star Mazda, both of which will cost you $100-$150k for the season to be done right.

OR, build yourself an SCCA IT class car and just go racing. Club racing as pure disaster, but at least you'll get some seat time. Maybe after a few years of that if you're serious and have $100k+ you can move up to something like the new MX5 Cup or US Touring Car or something.

So the moral of the story is, it takes huge amounts of money to get into racing. Teams/Sponsors don't just 'give you a chance' because you wanna give it a go, unfortunately...it's also a lot harder if you didn't start karting at an early age.

Good luck, hope you've got the bank for it.

+1 to what chuck said. The best advice that I got was "shut your mouth and open your ears"

Go to tampabay grand prix on Tuesday night as they have league racing. It will give you an opportunity to see how much raw talent you have.
Go Karts Racing :: Tampa Bay Grand Prix Go Kart Racing

Also get involved with the SCCA, auto-x at first and then club racing.

Here is a bio of a good driver, memo gidley. At one point in his career he was driving across the US in his toyota truck with his shifter kart in the back, that's how dedicated he is. Memo Gidley - Biography
Notice all the different types of series he has been involved in.

Try some performance racing schools. Just about every big road course track has a dedicated one. Find out then, if you actually have any natural talent.
Why don't you start small and at least attend some autocross events. Its a good cheap way to get some some basic seat time, and learn a car's limits, because as good as Grand Turismo is, its not a replacement for really being behind a wheel, even if its slow and on a course with just cones.

My friends think I am fast, too. Guess what. I am not!

You need to get started, then you will realize that you have a lot to learn. Autox is a good place to start. All it will cost you is the price of admission and a little wear on your tires. That is assuming that you have a car in good condition and will pass a tech inspection.

Let's just put it this way. JGTC and Lemans are EXPENSIVE! Put it this way do you have enough money to buy a Vanquish, stip it down, make the entire body carbon fiber (required for JGTC), and build the engine?
