Default Home Built car title Q's

I have some questions about how to get or apply for a Home Built car title. I have a 1986 Doge Dart that is a full drag car, but my father and I have been considering turning it into a saturday night car, the car still has working lights and bumpers. We bought the car w/o a title b/c it was only gonna be a drag car. The only things that are even similar to the way it came from the factory is the door panels and roof, everything else has been removed or changed with lighter parts, the car has no vin #'s anywhere. I was just wondering if it where even possible to be able to apply for a home built title b/c the car was basiclly rebuilt from the frame up and what standards it would have to meet to do so, if anyone has any knowledge that could help it would be greatly appericated. Thanks

It isn't a home built/kit car. You'll need to come up with a vin, and a good clean one at that, to properly get a title.

im not sure about not having a VIN but i do believe it has to pass a Highway patrol inspection before it can be issued a title at least it does for North Carolina.

I know the car was not stolen, plus it was built so long ago it would be hard to prove it, getting a vin for the car will be hard b/c how many 1968 Dodge Darts do you see laying around a junk yard, but that was one idea we considered. If anyone knows anything else about the inspection it would have to undergo here in FL it would help big time. thanks for all the info so far.

You are going to have to come up with a vin and a title. If it's a florida title, there won't be any inspection, you just go in and transfer ownership, pay sales tax, and pay for a tag. If it's an out of state title, they will send someone (usually a sheriff) out to visually inspect the car and make sure the vin on the car matches the vin on the title (in other words, getting a vin won't be enough, it also needs to be mounted on the car in the right place) Once a car hits the junk yard it's too late, junk yards won't part with a title. Your best bet is to hunt down a rusted out hunk of shit somewhere with a good title and get to work. DO NOT tell the people at the DMV what you've done either, vin swapping is flat out illegal no matter how legally you came to own the two cars. Are you sure there is absolutely no way to track down the vin/title for the car? It will save you A LOT of headaches.

Even the race prepped Darts and Barracuda's had VIN's on them. If it has any of the original sheet metal on it you may still be able to find bits of it.

This pic shows different hidden locations used on ameican cars. I don't think it applies only to Mopars. But you may try looking in some of these spots. One that the pic dosen't show but I would look anyways is the trunk latch striker bracket if you still have it there.

Kinda related question, how should I deal with a dash that has been swapped out for another and now the vin's don't match?

I have the original strip but it is damaged.
