Double check the shift linkage. You might be able to adjust it. Either that or the reverse synchro is completely shot, and if you force it in it would just grind. Has it been gradually getting more difficult to hit reverse, or just all of a sudden?

You'll probably have to crawl underneath and adjust the linkage. I don't know what you have so I couldn't tell you all the steps involved. But for a VW you just put it in a gear, release the bolt(s), turn/slide the linkage, and tighten it back down. It may take a couple of times to it perfect. It usually helps to have an extra set of hands to keep the shift lever in place.

Try adjusting your CMC freeplay adjustment rod on the clutch medal. If your disengagement point is too low, the clutch might not be fully disengaging.

Temporarily, to "clear" the shifter,
Put it in low, let clutch briefly out.
That will make it easier to go into reverse.

Others have offered some good solutions, too.-Bob

If that was it wouldn't it cause difficulties in all gears? I thought it was just reverse?

It would cause the most difficulty in the lowest gears.
