Question Numbers Matching?

Does numbers matching mean that the drivetrain that came in the car is still there and thats it or does it mean original drivetrain and 100% original body? I thought it meant the later but a friend of mine said it just means original drivetrain.

Thanks,
Frankie

I dont understand your question much,if the numbers match the way its suppose to,that means its the original motor.Doesnt mean that it hasnt been rebuilt or modified.

My RX7 numbers are not same as the VIN.I dont know why Mazda didnt do it like that.

On a domestic like a GM.Say you have a real 71 Chevelle SS,and all the humbers match. They car is worth alot more, than a SS with a changed motor.

Numbers matching means all original equipment. Original engine, transmission, rearend, acessories, etc. Normally the engine is not modified in a numbers matching car, because a new intake manifold and carburetor don't match numbers.

So if the car has been hit and has new fenders and a hood, the fact that the body is no longer original doesnt effect the fact that it is still numbers matching?

It won't affect the matching numbers since the hood and fenders probably aren't stamped, but it will affect the value of the car.

I figured it would hurt the value. I considered a car numbers matching it was 100% original, short of redoing the interior or paint.

First off

What kinda car you talking about?

If its a import, you wont be loosing much.
If its a domestic classic, like a Chevelle SS and it doesnt have a cowl induction hood etc etc,it will loose value on the car..

What kinda car are you refering to? A 1985 Yugo?

Not refering to any specific car, just cars in general.

A numbers matching car is one in which the Vin matches the driveline. It has nothing to do with the body. Numbers matching is usually only a concern for collectors, and helps keep clones at bay.

I thought it had to do with reading the VIN and seeing if the body code / color code / model code and motor code from the VIN matched the car and its model designation ..
