The ONLY importer to EVER get a Skyline past NHSTA/EPA was Motorex. Unless it got legalized by Motorex, it's here illegally, end of story.

What initially got them in trouble was side markers. They stopped installing them. After the NHSTA started noticing the Skyline articles (and the pics, without side markers), they started to review the petition. They found a few things that were 'incorrect' (or misleading ). Here are some of the discrepencies:

All Skyline made after 1996 need to be OBD2 compliant. There was never an RB series OBD2 ECU/engine manufactured by Nissan.
All Skylines need headlight that meet NHSTA specs. NO skyline headlights meet that standard.
All Skylines manufactured after 1989 need to have a SRS system, and Skylines made after 1994 need to have Drivers and Passenger side airbags.

Basically, it came down to the point, that ONLY a 1995 dual airbag Skyline could be imported and converted (if the headlight issue were addressed).

I also heard there were some issues around the airbags they installed too, but don't know much about that. Several Skylines were imported as 1995 models, that are actually 1996 or newer. The TK Skyline in Tampa was imported as a 1995, but I believe it's a 1996.

They screwed up a good thing

Good post and information though.
It is because every new vehicle sold in the U.S. is required to meet certain standards set forth by the National Highway Transportation Safety Board, and the Environmental Protection Agency. It has nothing to do with prejudice or jealousy

to be imported as a race car is not easy. You have to provide a list of races that you will be attending, the car MUST be modified to be a track car before importation (what that means, I don't know, but I have heard Rollcage, gutted interior, and the famous Coke Can test).

To the second half of your question...if it's seized, than it can only be exported, period. You could send it to a free trade zone, and then attempt to re-import it, but it will still be tough.

I lived in Japan from 1994-1996. I saw these cars daily, and I loved them. I always said I will own a R33 Skyline one day...and one day I will. But I'll be damned if somebody is gonna come take the car away from me after I finally get one.

When I returned from Japan, I tried to bring back my prelude. I couldn't. I have been reading the laws ever since (1995), and I have seen many scams and mis-information come and go... I have 10 years of research behind me, looking at every loophole possible...if there were a way, I would have one now.

Never said you couldn't register it (or even title it). But that does not make it legal. The car can still be confiscated.

re-read my post
