HP is the ability to move something.

a 100hp car or 500hp car can both do 60mph, but the 100hp car won't do 140mph. A 10hp lawnmower won't get to 40mph.

a go kart with say 20hp and 80lb ft of TQ (just go with me on the numbers) will only see maybe 40mph, but it will get their faster than a 500hp car with only 50lb ft of TQ, with all weights being equal. on the other side the 500hp car will catch up to the go jart quickly as the kart tops out at 40mph and the car continues to 150mph+

HP gets you from a to b, and determines top speed ( yes weight is a factor but for simplicity forget weight).

TQ determines how far back your head snaps when you step on the gas. you can have all the tq in the world but with 2hp you'll only win a 2ft race.
So what your saying is one of those diesel trucks that has a shit load of torque is faster than a car that has less than half?
Dont Hummers have a shit load of torque and no HP, and they take forever to accelerate?
I really dont get this.......

that comes down to weight. most of the full size trucks with diesels weigh close to 10,000 pounds. Most semi trucks have around 300HP but 1000+ ft/lbs of torque. against a car a semi will never win a race, but if you try to make your 300HP car pull the weight of the semi, it will not be a close race at all

if you take two vehicles that are very close in every aspect, but one has more torque, that one will accelerate faster.

the car that would win the race would be the 2nd since it can get up to max speed sooner, thus making more time at a faster rate of travel. so it is the quicker car. but since both cars have the same hp they are both just as fast as each other, both will have the same top speed, tq will not change that.
