ClearCoating HELP!!!
What the heck is going on here? I tried to paint my own clearcoat. It's like, when i paint one 1/2 of the roof, then this "stuff" gets on the other side of the roof, and it hardens, this leaves the surface very unsmooth. So when i go paint the other side of the roof, since its unsmooth, i end up spraying ALOT more than i really should if it was smooth. As i spray that 1/2, then the same process happens with the other side that i just got done spraying. Im using Nason 496 something. Am I mixing the activator correctly? Or am i using too much air? Im on the edge of taking it to some pro and spend $400.00. I thought that i could do it myself and save a few hundreds, but im paying the price of it.

That's why people pay for good work. **Coming from a guy how doesn't actually paint.** Try a little less hardner, run with medium pressure, and don't wait so long to get to the other side. You can jump back and forth by doing half and half, but you need to spray one side of the top within say 30 seconds to a minute(for that area), then hustle around to the other side and do the same. Nason will dry quickly, so put plenty on there and wet sand any imperfections out.
Don't worry if it doesn't come out perfect. No job will. Just slap enough clear on that you can sand out the imperfections. Besides, you shouldn't expect a professional job if this is your first real car your spraying. You got so many thing working against you like, no knowledge of materials, little knowledge of technique, little to no practice, spraying with no booth in a dusty shop, and tools that may not be the best. I bet your doing a pretty damn good job and just don't know it.
If you start to get frustrated with how its coming out then give it a rest. Let the Nason dry. Couple days in the sun, and then wet sand some of it down. Let the car dry, tack rag it, and try again. You're not painting in the ideal conditions with all the humidity that's in the air either. Unless your in a booth that dries the air for you, then you just have to expect some things you will have to work around. Put 4+ coats of clear on the car and you can sand out just about anything. GL

Did you just spray clear over your factory paint job?? Did you prime, and make sure the primer you used can be used with your paint?? Chemical reaction if you don't know what your putting down.

Enough hardner? That's the problem. He's not getting the other side sprayed before the previous side sets up. He's got hella over spray. Well, that's only an opinion which doesn't do much good without seeing the paint in person. Its hard to tell with the blurry pic, but it seems he's just not applying it fast enough, or its drying faster than he can cover the area.

There are many things it could be cause its hard to tell by the pic. Paint work is finiky(sp?) like that. That's why i suggested to just put on as much clear as possible then come back later and sand out the trouble spots.

Even if you spent 500 bucks to learn the way to correctly apply, and not apply, paint you will still come out ahead. Once you get the basics down you can do this the rest of your life for all your future vehicles. Or worst case senario you relize the value of a good paint job, and understand why you can't get one for 500 bucks.
