Default Rod went out on a friends car, does the engine need to be replaced?

A friend of mine with a 2000 impala v6 had a rod go out in the engine. They took it to a shop and was told it was going to be over 3k in parts and labor to replace the whole engine. Is there anything else to do?

"rod went out"

Like, it came through the block? If not, you might be able to get away with a new rod and probably a new crank or at least a grind from where it fucked up. Worst case scenario, you need a new block.

How much do you think the labor would be on replacing the block? Any good shops in the tampa citrus park area?

sadly enough, thats about right for price.

crank labor is approx 20-25 hours labor by the book. depening on the car too. also it depends if the rod is stretched, if it hit a piston or went even farther.
i just had the crank on my car replaced...cost me about 2000...but that was a new cam, timing chain, crank kit, seals, gaskets, oil pump, plugs, wires, radiator, tranny mount...i did a lot more than i needed to, but figured what the hey, if the motors out, do as much as i can afford.

I was driving ( a few years back) my mothers camry while my car was in the shop....and about 10 seconds after leaving my driveway I hear a loud bang, and it seemed like I ran over something. So I pulled over, without any power steering or brakes....and find a huge hole in the front of the block, and an even bigger hole in the back (seen when we pulled the engine). Since the car only had 40k miles, the dealer replaced the entire bottom end for free...however they told us it would've been about $3k had we not had the warranty.

As Mars said, call a salvage/junk yard as they will sometimes supply the engine and install it for you for a decent fee.
