For 40k, you could build on sick FFR. I'm still under 20k for mine. I'll be done with the suspension for under 25k. That leaves 15k for engine, brakes and transmission.

If you want a sub 100k supercar, look at the noble M400 http://www.1gracing.com/m400.html

$40,000 total? Or $40,000 in addtion to the vehicle?

$40,000 total... I would say 89 Mustang Coupe. $3,000 (for the car) and $37,000 in motor and transmission mods. I could go into detail, but you get my point.

That will probably get you the closest to it. But don't count on it being able to go through any turns.

Completly custom chassis from the ground up. Some lightweight tube frame, roll cage, 2JZ/7M in da back, 6 speed, minor mods, A/C, PS, just the basics to KISS. The rest can go toward some custom body panels, hopefully some CF ones.

If not, then I'd do what Leonard did and get a Shelby replica...put a Powerstroke in it or something, maybe a stroked Inline 6ex.

You're a complete idiot. It will cost you SERIOUS bank in order to develop a tube frame car from the ground up with decent suspension geometry. You'd spend 40k (minimum) in wind tunnel testing just to get a body shape that will be aerodynamically acceptable at 180mph (and it will look like ass by the time you're done making aero modifications).

And a Powerstroke diesel in a FFR?????? / yourself now.
