saying it takes no skill is dumb. those guys would drive circle (pun intended) around pretty much everybody on this site.

is it entertaining? not at all to me.

is it low-tech? yes and no. still using carbs, but pushing them to the max. this has the drawback that any technology gained will not going into modern cars (F1 is great for applications in the higher end autos)

the way they induce competition (restrictor plates) is also weak IMO. if there's a driver that is head and shoulders above the rest, he deserves to win every weekend (a la schumacher).

are they athletes? as much as any racer, but there was some NASCAR guy on espn when i was in the gym, and the dude was FAT. not chunky, but FAT. i found that a bit funny.

 

The "are drivers athletes" argument is moot to me. I couldn't care less. Wait, maybe I do care, if I were a pro racer I would not be overly thrilled to be associated with the likes of the typical "big dumb athlete" stereotype - a stereotype well deserved.

As for the fat athlete(?) have you seen Warren Sapp? Remember Refrigerator Perry? Willy Stargell?

 

Check out Mark Martin's workout and you couldn't probably keep up with him doing just that (and I believe he's around 50) let alone keep up with him on a track..

The arogance of some on this site just amazes me. There are some who have talent (i.e. Chuck) but the rest have to work on their education first before attempting to handle a high horsepower vehicle.. (i.e. doomreaper).

I think I could give those guys a run, and I have done laps at Desoto. Its a fast track, faster than one would think.

But I agree with Chuck, NASCAR takes an unbelievable amount of skill. I am thinking of going to Wakins Glen in 2 weeks, I was told there will be a bunch of the drivers practicing for the race in Aug. I will find out how slow I actually am, despite what I think.

you need to show up for an auto-x or track day and find out how bad a driver you really are. and drifting is like figure skating in cars and just as pointless
