Default 5.0 L rear main seal

just had a question on the install of one. i already did one and it leaks like a mo-fo so i have to do it again any advice would be great. some one was telling me you have to use some kind of silicone to seal i did not use any thing like this. some one else is telling me a sealant of any kind isn't required. i am stuck in the middle cause i don't know shit.

You dont use any sealent. Maybe you accidently bent or ripped the seal while you were installing it? Did one side go all the way in and the other stick out? If you tried to knock that side back in then you might have damaged the seal.Try using a big socket to evenly knock it in.

You fucked the seal up somehow.Do like Krautburner said and use a socket to tap it in evenly.

+1 about the socket... make sure the edge of the socket only touches the very far outside of the seal.. if the socket is to small... you stand a chance of it hitting the crank and damaging it. If i remember correcly its a 2 1/8th socket... dont hold me to it tho.. also do the yellow 3M thing, doesnt NEED it.. but it HELPS...
