Default Car title question

How can a car that's never been wrecked have a rebuilt title? Stolen, stripped, then recovered???

Cause I found a steal of a deal on a car on Autotrader.....but the rebuilt title blows.

Rebuilt titles are issued to cars that are either damaged beyond 75-80% OR are revcovered from a theft after the Insurance company has paid a total loss claim OR the car may have flood damage OR the car may have had hail damage (alot of new nissans had this 2 years ago).

There are MANY different types of "REBUILDABLE" reasons.

Should of just asked me....

Seller claims it has not been. Of course I wouldnt' take their word for it until I did more research. But other than being totalled and rebuilt.....that's what I was wondering about that would give something a rebuilt title.

Best thing to do is check the car out, if you don't know what to look for, bring someone that does. Cars can be fixed properly to where you would never have a problem, or they can be rigged up and thrown together to make a fast buck, I've seen both. A friend of mine bought a 2000 Mustang GT with 3000 miles on it in 2000 for $12,000 with a rebuilt title. There was supposed to be flood damage. We couldn't find anything wrong with the car, not even rust on the seat frames. Sometimes they are insurance scams, and I've also heard of insurance companies totalling every car in a row of cars at a dealership because one of them was full of water and the dealer claims every one at that end was flooded. Bottom line to my ranting is check it out, you might get lucky, just remember when you go to sell it or trade it you won't get market value because it has a rebuilt title, so make sure you get it cheap enough now.

I might try that too. The car is in the Naples area.....so it'd have to be worth my while to drive almost 4 hours. But the amount they want is like $8,000 less than book value.....so it's definitely a good price if the car isn't f'ed up.
