The Best 4 Cylinder of all time
Gotta say Mitsu 6 bolt 4G63. People have made over 600 WHP on stock motors. No one has really found the limit as I only know of one person hurting a motor from sheer power. Even the 7 bolt is impressive. People have made over 500 WHP on the "Weak" 7 bolt motor. I personally have run 12 flat in a 3200 lb car on a completely stock longblock with the boost set @ 28 psi without ever even changing the headgasket. AMS has seen ~550 WHP on their Evo8 with a stock block also. The stroker kits available allow you to go to 2.4 liters. People have made over 500 WHP on PUMP gas. People have run 10s on Pump gas with this motor. Mike and I have run 11's stock turbo/engine.
too much good stuff.

4G63 takes my vote, all of the stuff joe said, its weakest point is that its a balance shaft motor, which can be taken care of very easily with a days work and an engine lift, and the only real downside to the motor, was the finnicky nature of the car they put it in for the U.S. market (eclipse/talon/laser), im quite curious to see how their new platform works out (lancer evo), so far, has been so good...11's on stock turbo w/o spray
...sick valvetrains as well, most dont know, that it is quite safe to rev your 4G63 to 8k with pretty much no worry of floating valves, although its still a rocker arm setup, i find it far superior than the SR20 (the main competitor to the 4G), the head designs (both 1g and 2g) as far as port shape/design goes are pretty much unbeatable for a given purpose, a 2G head will make for awesome torque/fast spool, a 1G head will make for insane top end flow...also not to forget the success 4G63 powered cars have had in rally events, which pretty much disproves the "they aren't reliable" theory...by the way, there is a street driven 8 second car powered by a 4G63 with a stock block (not internals, but the block itself) and stock crankshaft....it would also be tough to forget about the 3 cars that are currently running 7's with this motor, one of which is an 85 lancer
, then Brent Rau's drag 2G, and David Buschur's drag 2G, both RWD
....there has to be a reason that this was the 2nd best rated motor behind the 2JZ...being as that the 2JZ is a 6, even the people who do the rating stuff have put the 4G63 where it belongs...the top

sr20's can't be revved past 7k without modification. 9k is only possible with work...if their head design were better i'd give the sr20 more consideration.
a 6 bolt 4g63...as joe said...needs nothing to rev to 9k...and has historically made the most power...reliably.
