You can substitute the cleaner they use with Simple Green. It works well.

Never do it while hot.
And the best think ive found after cleaning the engine to keep it clean is use wheel cleaner. Its not as harsh as any of the cleaners and is safer on all metals.

Simple Green + a cloth = blingin engine bay.
Example...

On the piping I used Mother's cleaners wax. I need to buy aluminum polish for the radiator.

Craig (solo_mata_me) showed me an excellent way to clean/detail the engine. Use the Gunk foamy brite engine cleaner as directed on can. Then use some foamy tire brite (I think it was silicone based by Black Magic). Spray that all over and drive the car around. After about 30-60mins, pop the hood and wipe off the excess. Looks absolutely beautiful...and no having to get your hands dirty.
