If Ford actually made a decent Auto for my car I wouldn't have converted it to a 5speed. If I had 3k I would buy Leveltens bullet proof automatic for my car, but considering the car cost 900. I want to finish other things like suspension etc before I get a good automatic. That's a BIG if though, because I like autocross so much I may keep the 5speed just for that fact. ATX owns in a straight line plain and simple. MTX owns on cornering plain and simple. Get an automatic 5-6 speed with paddle gear controls and you have the best of both worlds for street IMO

Well, manuals sap less power than most autos, and they let you pick your shift points. They are pretty important in going around corners quickly, since engine braking in an auto is hard and being able to quickly select the right gear is harder. But autos have many advantages in drag racing.

But if you are talking about modifying the auto that much then the manual can have the second and third pro-shifted (can still be street driven just as much as the converter/transbrake car) and shifting won't be an issue.

Do you own a Torch Red FRC and tremble every time you drive under I75 on Hwy 60 and look in your rearview mirror? If so you are suffering from what is known as Cobraphobia.

No top fuel dragsters shift it is either 3 or 4 times. And there is a lot of people that i know that dont lift their feet when the shift in the cars when they are racing. It isn't the smartest thing to do. But they still do it.

Any nitro racers out there to explain?

If you look at Pro 5.0, Pro Import RWD or any other class that allows clutchless 5 speeds, they dominate when properly setup. If the clutch tuner can setup the clutch properly and allow just the right amount of slippage off the line and the suspension works well, an auto car will not win....all other things being equal. Case in point....Brad Brand's 10.5" outlaw car set the world record running a 7.14 @ 206 mph running a Liberty 5 speed. This is a couple tenths faster than his previous best running an auto(power glide or 3 speed Bruno I think). No one ever thought a 5 speed car would be able to run the kind of times on such a smal tire. It just goes to show what good suspension and good clutch tuning can do.

Now a street application, an auto 99% of the time will out run a 5/6 speed car. There are few instances where a well geared 5/6 speed car with good suspension tuning and a good driver can hang with an auto car....all things being equal of course. For the typical street car there is only so much you can do with the suspension though. An auto will put the power to the ground much much smoother and will be more consistant off the line.

Oh also, top fuel doesn't run transmission at all. They run a multi disc clutch setup.

Just my $0.02.
i thought manuals would outrun autos because of the gearing...??? i know autos are much better off the line, but thats only because most people dont know how to launch properly in a manual, since its much more difficult than jus putting your foot down. there is this guy who has a red LT1 Z but its auto. stock same as me. off the line hes gone on me, but i catch up and pass him everytime... maybe my car has more power, i dont know. but almost every auto car that i have run, i have pulled on them from 3rd and up (power being relatively the same of course).

Torque multiplication from the automatic gives it the edge in cars that are otherwise equal. ET comes from torque and trap speeds come from hoorse power. I'll gladly give up a little HP for some extra torque and ET.

can you explain that please....just to let you know, i am goin by what i have heard all my life, which is that there is less powerloss from a manual than from an auto. and i understand that as being both torque and hp....
