Default Porting, etc.

I'm going to be doing something that really hasn't been tried before and building up an Escort Split Port Induction engine. I was just wondering if anyone out there ports etc or know someone that does fairly reasonable priced. I already have the block intake etc but I'm not using the head or internals from the donor engine so I have to pick up a head from the j/y and I'm going to have to get some rods/pistons made. I want to build the car with as much horsepower n/a as I can. I'm hoping for numbers somewhere in the 180 horsepower range or so which shouldn't be a problem from what other people have done to their 4 cylinder fords. I'm using a Ford 3.8 55mm throttle body which should be plenty big enough and running some 5.0 yeelow top injectors it will have a MSD DIS2 ignition etc an a/f meter and controller as well. My money is tight at the moment with automotive school being a priority and all so I'm getting things slowly. I already have the tb/intake/injectors/block the rods are the same length as the Zetec rods so I don't have to get those custom fabricated but the pistons will be a problem. I'm wondering what type of c/r I should run it's stock 9.2 :1 I'm thinking 10.5:1 or even higher possibly give me some ideas if you actually took the time to read this long ass post lol.

Oh I'm also doing an adjustable cam gear and UDP with overdrive pulley for the alternator as well as a CAI, a 4-2-1 header from a 1st gen Escort GT 1.9 which just needs to be port matched a little and a 2 1/4 inch mandrel exhaust with a performance stock looking muffler that will hopefully give it a deep note and not a fart racket.

What do you mean hasn't been done before? The SPI is basically the old CVH motor...tons of aftermarket. Do a search on Yahoo, you should find some info there.

BTW...it may just be cheaper to dump in a DOHC Zetec.

Here is another resource for you to check out:

Some of the unfortunate folks who decided to get the SPI Foci are trying their hardest to source parts for more power.

The problem is the focus SPI is different than the Escort SPI and the 1997 Escort SPI is different than all other SPI motors(different fuel delivery system). But yes it's still a CVH, thats why the rods are the same length and that's why I'm getting Zetec rods actually. As well, if you want to look at a comparison of engine specs I have them on my website at www.escortsport.com thanks for the sites I'll dig into those some.

Oh and I know that it's cheaper to dump in a DOHC Zetec, but that would take all the fun out of it. I'm looking to learn something here and do something that is a real challenge the SPI has alot of untapped potential whereas the Zetec is pretty well tapped out for the most part.

My recommendation is email John P., he's done numerous Zetec heads and is a 40yr retiree Ford Engineer. He's pretty well known in the ZX2 community. He does top notch work, as for price, well I'm sure that will depend on the job. Here's his email, give him a shout. He's located in Cape Coral, FL.
