Try it starting off at 325 rwhp. And you used aftermarket heads. These were stock LS1 heads and valves, only with a port job and milling. What would it take you to reach 417 rwhp with a hydraulic cam and still be a very tame daily driver with 25 mpg? Alot more $$$$ than $2000Your still using the stock upper and lower intake? If not add that to your price list as well as your new carb

No milling on my heads and my port job consisted of about a hours worth of work to clean them up. Yes you used stock heads and started off with 325 hp, I would hope so with 40 + more cubic inches.
417 rwhp with a hydraulic cam would not be a problem if had a 347 which would again be the same as the LS1.

Stock upper intake ?
Umm o.k. ?Lower intake costed $100 and the new (untuned) carb cost $300.
So it looks like I am still under $2k with the current set-up.
No replacement for displacement. Maybe this argument would be better if we used the GM 305 as a comparision and you would still have a few more c.i.d.'s..
So in order to achieve 417 rwhp you need aftermarket heads, cam ,intake, crank, pistons, rods, pushrods? Basically junk everything but the block, which will spilt at anything over 475 rwhp? Thats alot of stuff
Thats funny though...if it were that easy to acheive that # with a 347 hydraulic cam and if it were so cheap Id expect to see them everywhere. I have not seen one yet. The 417 rwhp is probably just above the AVG for LS1 heads and cam and they are everywhere and since prices are coming down everyone is getting them. And people who daily drive thier LS1s can still do so without a problem.
Is that with AC, powersteering, etc. in the stang? Daily drivable mild mannered? Not peaky?
Also...this package that made 417 is very mild in some areas. I can guarentee you with a few more upgrades 440-450 rwhp or more is possible. As a matter of fact...the latest heads & cam packages that use the more expensive L S 6 heads have been putting down 460-475 rwhp :o
Oh...and you can get a 98-99 LS1 Camaro for between 9k and 11k all day now.
To me it doesnt get much better if you want an excellent daily driver that will knock the socks off most things on the street and still be capable of running deep 11s.

A 347 shortblock costs about $1,400, cheap if you ask me considering the cost of a newer LS1. The blocks are good to 550 h.p. after that the crack the main webbing. I guess I could just take the easy way with the current 302 and spray it to get 10's.
A 347 with a hydraulic cam making over 450 h.p. is very easy because you have not seen one does not mean they do not exist, they are out there. On the other hand I have not seen to many 15 year old Camaro / F-Bodies running around with the stock bottom end, 80K miles, and 250+ passes at the track. Again a testament to a cheap and durable package Ford put out many years ago.
Mine has power steering, full interior and I removed the a/c because I had constant a/c leakage problems. Damn Fords.
Mild mannered ? Peaky ? I guess that is in the eye of the beholder. Mine runs almost to cold and can make run after run at the track with no cool down and then drive home. You have seen me do this a few times. So to answer that question, yes mild mannered.
And the fact that you can get one of these $30K LS1 cars a few years later for $10K tells me all I need to know and re-afirms why they are no longer in production.
Hahaha...30k car. They were a base price of like 21k in 1998 or 99 and usually sold for less than 20k. Resale is not that great....but Im all for a shitty resale..thats what makes the aftermarket go around. An abundance of cheap cars that can go fast with little mods.
So let me get this straight...according to your calculations I can but a 91 stang and put $2650 into it and get a 347 stroker that will make 417 rwhp and be daily drivable. Jeez..they must be everywhere
The only $1400 347 ive seen is a rotating assy.

. I have never seen a built, 347 short block go for that low. I have yet to see a hydro cammed 347 make over 450 rwhp and make as much as torque as an LS-1 heads/cam car within the rpm range that most LS-1's do. Anderson Ford Motorsport has 2 347 hydro cammed cars making 450 rwhp....less than 400 rwtq and spinning 8000rpm. Not to mention these are both trailered race cars with almost 13:1 compression. And the fact that you can buy a $30k LS-1 years down the road for $10k doesn't mean shit...you can still buy one for less than what you paid brand new over a decade ago and spend less money to make well over 400 rwhp n/a with a mild heads/cam package. And you can talk about your 15 year old bottom end or whatever...how many actual miles are on that car? How many years has that car sat in the garage? A hydro cammed 347 is NOT easy to make 450 rwhp. I still have yet to see one make that much power in a daily driven street car that doesn't have to spin over 7k to make power. Most 347 combos I have seen make just shy of 400rwhp or a hair over 400 rwhp, with nowhere the broad torque band of an LS-1.
Instead of straying off the path of the topic at hand, stop bringing power adders into this equation. We're talking about naturally aspirated power here, with a broad torque band, less than 7k rpm and mild street manners. My friend's 347 prolly made a hair over 400 rwhp.....and he had all mack daddy engine components. TEA ported TW's, Shortened runner Cobra intake, big ass cam with almost a .600 lift, electric water pump, headers port matched to the exhaust ports on his 347 etc etc etc....a lot of nice components......and he had his hands full trying to beat Joey in his heads/cam auto LS-1. Whoever was first off the line one the race. You say hydro cammed 347's can make over 450rwhp easily....prove it to me.
I read all the major boards, spoken to numerous people about this subject and quite frankly everyone is still trying to scratch their heads to come up with the perfect combo of parts for a Ford 347 to make the power these LS-1's do within the same rpm range and broad torque band without having to spin 8k rpm and run 4.56 gears just to make up for the lack of balls to hang with a heads/cam LS-1. Show me a solid 347 combo with an operating range from 3k-7k that can make the same power and torque a heads/cams LS-1 or LS-6 makes. Hell, I saw a heads/cam Z06 at 3200 lbs trapping 127 mph at BMP a few weeks back, all motor stock bottom end. That car was making 460 rwhp on motor. Show me a fox body 347 with all those creature comforts trap 127mph and make 460 rwhp with under a 6800 rpm operating range.

I'm a Ford guy as much as you are but I'm also not oblivious to other brands of performance and respect what they can do.

I stand corrected, the 347 shortblock after the machine work is locally completed to the block would be around $1,700.
My bad.
And I guess these guys fall into, "you get what you pay for".

so, that camaro made that power with no bolt ons, no tune and no other modifications what so ever.....????? alot of the stuff that is already on there makes a difference once you play with everything else....
it's like saying you can take a 5.0 and do heads and cam bt leave the stock exhust alone and use the stock mass air.....
i'd say the only fair way to argue this is list everythig done.....
and once you do that it is going to become a carbed or EFI battle.....
