What kind of Helmet do i need?

Not that this couldn't be totally wrong, but I have heard the argument made that bike helmets are designed for a single large impact, where as a car helmet is designed to protect your head as it bounces around and off your car.
That said, I would buy a Snell rated helmet. Most sanctioning bodies I have seen want the Snell rating and want it to be no more then two ratings old.

I heard that same thing from a friend of mine, and that is what made me prompt this question. however bike helmets are snell rated as well....
so what can i draw from that conclusion? it doesnt help at all.
You don't think that a wrecked bike rider rolling down the road and bouncing off of curbs is going to need his helmet to protect him from multiple impacts too?
That multiple impact story must be some automotive wives tale.
The snell rating ensures the helmets ability to cushion impacts and resist penetration.
The snell standards are so tough that they are the reason why you can find a lot of helmets that are DOT rated but not snell.
Just get a snell rated helmet and you will be safe for anything that your seatbelt can keep you in the car for.
