Does anyone get Ignition ping from 87 octane?
Does anyone get Ignition ping from 87 octane?
I was running 87 octane and getting pings under load, pressing down the gas...87 is what Ford says to run on the 4.6 01 GT...
I already know 87 burns faster and hotter, is 93 a waste of time....

I had 3 bad experiences running 87...who knows if my car truly needs a higher oct fuel...but if my car could run on 87 like it runs on 93+, i sure as hell would put it in....anything to save money....

If it recommends 87 and its pinging under load I would just recommend bumping up a notch to 89 to see if that does it for you.
Does your car have a knock sensor? If it does and its not correcting this issue before you can hear it then perhaps it is kaput.

I would run 93 in a heartbeat if I heard pinging.
You gotta run higher octane even if just have intake or/and exhaust done.

Why then does Ford say to run 87? The compression ratio is not really high enough to run 93.
The ratio is 9:5
I am thinking I have another problem?

I have always used 89 or 93 but you could have just got a bad batch of gas with water in it. You might also have a bad o2 or knock sensor, they love to go bad and there is no way to know until it shows a problem. Also check the timing on the car, maybe someone has advanced it to much.
Is it even possible to change the timing on a newer 4.6 engine?
Where can I find data about the knock sensor, O2 sensor, and setting the timing for the 4.6?
Thank you very much guys....
One more question. Would the MAC CAI make it ping, becuase its running lean from too much air? I always thought the air meter would handle that?

99+GTs don't have knock sensors only cobras do and you can buy a Timing adjuster from Steeda if you want, but like everyone said just run 89 or 93 and see what happens.
