Default Need help please.

I'm trying to remove the clutch, fan and pulley from an LQ9 engine. As luck would have it the water pump in my Silverado is going bad and the 5.3 is set up just like the 6.0. So I am getting desperate.

I did some research. Ended up talking with a GM powertrain rep in Michigan.
There is a special tool used to hold the water pump pulley still so you can break the nut loose that holds the clutch and fan on.

I found 2 part numbers for 2 tools that do the same thing.
GM J-41240-1
and
SP Tools #99800

It looks kinda like a wrench but it has 2 tits that go in the small holes on the water pump pulley to hold it still.

Does anyone know where I can rent this tool or anywhere locally that I can buy it? I need it ASAP.

Thanks,

Hurst

I think it's called a "Spanner wrench" Hurst. (I could be wrong) I always just made a new one when I needed something like that. Or used a screwdriver wedged between two of the bolts. But you're a smart guy and can figure that out.

LSx motors dont have bolts on them. Not like a Ford at all. Nothing to wedge,.. nothing to pry on. Just a single large center nut. Need a special tool to lock the pulley from rotating around, otherwise getting the nut off is a serious PITA. A complete asshat design.

try a strap wrench , or use a leather belt. You wouldn't believe the things a strap wrench can do with a decent sized handle..

So I'm screwed either way.

I watched a video on youtube where a guy bolted up a small chain to one of the holes on the pulley and locked it to the top of the head. I'm going to try that method tomorrow. If that doesnt work I'm definitely going to get down and see Shaun and John to see what they have that I can use to get it off with.

Going to check and see if HarborFreight sells a strap wrench large enough to go around the pulley. That looks like it might be an alternative.
And a one piece housing for the thermostat? WTF is up with that? What a piss poor design this whole mess is.

Thanks guys,

Hurst

They have a universal kit, Advance does also. And neither one has a wrench the correct size for that nut and neither one has a tool to lock the pulley in place. You have to leave a $50 deposit to rent it,.. just to find out that it doesnt work.
