Fox wiring harness
87-93 Fox wiring harness...can someone explain the differences between these harnesses.
My car 1989, has no wiring (dash and underhood). I only need the bare essentials for a carbed car. Ignition, lights, starter and charging.
This is what I was told:
Is this for fuel injected only?
I have a 90 dash and wiring harness from a V8 car. The harness I got goes from column to everything for the chassis side from fuse box through the firewall to starter and everything in between.

ok here it is 87-89 are the same,90 is only,91-92.5 and 93 are not that the same. you need a 89 for your car

To the best of my knowledge,.. and its just based on articles and various forum threads I've read,.. but the dash harness are pretty much all the same. Then you have the Air Density and MAF engine harness,. and then the later 92/93 engine harness which supposedly Ford addressed some issues with the salt and pepper shakers.
Thats all that I am aware of as far as the differences go. I'm sure Raymond can elaborate more. Other than the Salt and Pepper thing,.. I dont know why else the 93 harness are so sought after. I sold the one from my 93 for $100 and I didnt even ask for that amount,.. it was offered to me. I didnt think I would get $50 for it. I later learned that they sell for more.
For just a carb setup all you need is the basic harness. Find someone parting out their fox and snatch it up.

Thanks Hurst
I dont see why it wont. The only hassle you might have is with the turn signal because 89 had tilt wheel and its wired differently. But easy enough to fix. I'm putting a complete tilt column out of an 89 into my 93 and I'm carb'd.
Get him to elaborate as to why it wont work. If its just because of the turn signal/tilt wheel thats an easy fix.

Ask him again,.. when he can speak engrish,..
89 definitely had tilt,.. at least the GT's and V8 cars did. I'm honestly not sure if the 4 cylinder cars were different. In 90 they went to the air bag/no tilt wheel.

I think some of it has to do with the gauge clusters. There are several other items to. I have been told the same things about the years not being compatable as you listed and from some people who I know would be correct. (guys like Ray, that build/rebuild these things pretty regular)
I even had one of the newer Ford Racing harnesses and sold it once the problems with using it were pointed out. I cant remember all of them, but it was enough that I did not want to cut up and splice into a new harness, just to be able to use it.
Can Painless make one for a 89?

Guys,
I also don't know all the differences, but there are a lot between the years. Like on some years, the fuel pump relay is on the pass. side fender and some years it's under the drivers seat. There are difference in plugs for the different years as well. I am with Ray and will only use the same year harness.
As for going carb and what you need... Sorry I can't help on that project. That is probably something Shaun would know, since he converts to carb quite a bit.

I'm pretty certain the plugs in the dash side of the harness changed on the later fox cars. Things like the instrument panel, HVAC, signal stalks, etc.
If I'm reading this correctly, your dash and harness match, and you are going carbed? You should be fine then. The only wiring you need on a carbed motor is keyed power to the starter, keyed coil hot, tach, and alternator wiring. All of which can be pulled out of your harness, scrap the rest, and hook it up.
