Default Truck transmission question??

I am looking at a 90 f150 4x4 that needs a transmission. It has the overdrive trans in it right now and I know they can be pricey to change/rebuild. If I am able to pull it off I will be a broke bitch and was wondering if I could put a c-4 in its place? (could probably get one alot cheaper) How would it affect the transfer case/driveshaft?? I am not real familiar with 4x4's. Thanks for any help/advice.

LMK what tranny it is and I have a builder that can get it done cheaper than anywhere and probably cheaper than a c4 swap. Been a buddy for many years.

i just did a c6 to aod swap 4x4 for a customer. no length issues on the shafts just a movement of the cross member. FYI you should be able to find that aod for a 4x4 cheap enough tho....

Are the truck AOD's and different than the car ones? Bigger drums / more clutches ect?

Longer tail shafts typically on the truck AOD.No different internals but the later model AOD's had refinements(89 on) better lubrication, stamped steel drums, better valve body, etc. These arent known as difficult transes to rebuild. You could do it with a rebuild video and lip-seal installers.Use a new torque converter and flush out all lines completely.Make sure torque converter is fully seated on install.Make sure TV cable is adjusted correctly or it will burn up instantly.

From everything I've heard the AOD and E4OD (I think that's the one) are junk. Everyone I've talked to has had nothing but problems with them, especially rebuilt ones.

Mars is right, if its the electronic Automatic it is the E4OD, thing is a peice of shit. Heavy as fuck, weak as hell. And the bad thing is that trans was the building block to all 5R100 trannys they use now in their trucks. But they did some huge improvements.

Check out Silverfox at clickclick racing for solid expert advice. If AODE or 4R70 They can handle substantial power, dont know about E4OD.Baumann Engineering has a good web page showing how to ID the trans.
