Default Who can school me on 4x4's

I am looking to get a truck (beater) and it seems like I am running across alot of 4x4's. I am not looking to spend much money and have a few questions. Lets say something happens to the 4 wheel drive, or you break the front driveshaft or something, can the truck still be driven? I am not necessarily looking for a 4x4 (as I know nothing about them) but if I happen to find a decent one for the money, I just want to make sure that I can still use the truck if something happens to the 4 wheel drive. Thanks alot guys.

If you don't need a 4X4, don't buy one. They cost more... and there are more moving parts to fail or break.

If you want to do any towing or driving in bad conditions, you may want a 4X4. Most 4 wheel drive systems can be shut off with a button or the smaller stick... or on the older trucks there are manually changeable at the hubs.

Can you still drive it? Depends on if the transfer case is busted or something in the front end. You could always swap me front ends, were looking to make this one 4wd

Typically, if the front axle is not engaging, you can redneck 2wd it, just remove the driveshaft.

it all depends on what you get if you dont really want a 4x4 i would stay away from automatic locking hubs or anything electric for that matter... just my opinion

yep, manual hubs and selection on the transfer case is a must....or drive flanges. disco front ends are lame and always spinning, more wear and tear and parts to break.
