Default Ebrake issue - 2003 Ford Ranger

My parents have a 2003 Ford Ranger and their parking brake has failed. The pedal and the mechanism inside the cab looks to be working properly. The cable is still attached to the vehicle and in one piece. However, it's dangling and the pedal just sticks to the floor. You can pull the release lever and manually lift the pedal back up.

I have absolutely no idea what would cause this.. I just took a wild guess that a bracket might have snapped. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced.

Sounds like the cable snapped or the stop at the end of the cable where it hooks into the mechanism stripped off. Check and the return spring too and see if it is still properly coiled and attached.
