Me and my buddies argue about this all the time. I tell them, the only way I would own an automatic in a performance car is if it was a dedicated race car. Only in a car that I was racing professionally, because you need consistency and you can never match an auto with a clutch driven manual for consistency in drag racing.

However if its a car that sees any street duty what-so-ever I would only have it one way - manual. I love cutting through the gears too much to ever get rid of it.

You can pick up T5 transmissions all day long for beyond reasonable. Hell, even a junked one and have someone rebuild it for you. Maybe 500.00 and thats pushing it.

5-speed would be the cheaper way out. I with Tiffany on the auto. Stall and a manuel valvebody...shift it manually and no miised gears. Most run 5 speeds cause it makes'm "feel" fast.

5 speed, cause theres nothing like popping the clutch off the rev limiter and the sound of all hell is breaking loose on you're ass inside the car!!!!!!!

Just make sure you have someone ready to pick up the parts when they go flyin!

There, fixed it.

If you're racing and want to win...go with an automatic. Torque multiplication is a wonderful thing.

Plus you don't miss 3rd gear.

All things being equal, the auto will win every time. (Of course, we're not talking a stock AOD here.) That being said, the 5 speed will probably be cheaper...for a little while.
