sure, but for how long??
To the original poster, save your money and get an aftermarket block. Heres why, currently your looking to make 400-450 hp. As we all know that will be fun for a little while but you will want more down the road,we all do. So save your self the time and headaches and build (overbuild) your short block know. This way when you upgrade to more HP you won't have to dick with the lower end. You'll be happier in the long run.
^^^ True. A stock block is sufficient for the HP he is aiming for. But, he will need a good turn, and he'll need to keep the RPM in a reasonable range or the engine will turn into an artificial reef candidate. I've run stock blocks at that hp range for years an have yet to break one.
But, as O'Toole says, the temptation to squeeze just a few more hp out of it and let it scream, especially on a cold day, is fatal to a stock block.

Early block will live way past a roller block. People have the majical # of 500 and think this applies to all 302's, well it dont! I think hes looking fpr 4-500hp later down the road. That would be a wasted $3000 for a block and machine work that would build the whole motor or turbo kit. If someone says go aftermaket for 500hp they must have plenty of money
agreed the older blacks are stronger, also harder to find and the cost of machine work puts them almost at the cost of an aftermarket block thats ready to go.
Also you didn't read my whole post, who builds a motor to 500hp nowadays and doesn't thrive for more. So build it once and be done with it. And if you can build a whole motor AND a turbo kit for $3000 then you must have some magic pixie dust I've never seen before.

A good block is always a plus but if his 347 kit has a cast crank then just go for an oem block. No sense putting a forged crank in a stock block. And no sense putting a cast crank in a Dart/Boss/World block.

The Dart SHP block seems to be the best bang for the buck.
