when you're cruising at highway speed and give it gas, do the rpms speed up but not the car? probably need a clutch.

Yes exactly. By the way when I push to about 3-4000 rpm I'll smell a heavy sweet scent, which I imagine Is the clutch burning up. Do I need to get a flywheel as well? Is it a hard job to replace a clutch, could it be done at home on Jack stands or in a shop? One more question, how would I know which clutch to buy? Just google 87 mustang gt clutches? I appreciate it.

Ya its your clutch. The flywheel can either be replaced or turned. But it can't be turned if its too damaged. And the only way to see if the flywheel has excessive damage is to look at it meaning you won't know untill you take it all apart. To get a flywheel turned its usually 40 to 50 bucks.

As for what type of clutch its all up to you. What type of mods do you have on the car will determine what clutch you should use.

The t5 transmission is probably one of the easiest to take out on your back if your feeling strong.

Pm me if you have any questions on types of clutchs I have used them all and I will see what type of prices I can get them for. Maybe I can get you setup on a clutch and install package.
