gears
that's not a bad price if it includes everything.
you need more than just the gear...you also need the install kit which comes with bearings, shims, etc...and fluid which isn't cheap...plus the labor to get down there.

(Too much IMO, but I'm not a shop owner either.
There are places online to get ford racing gears for 150 shipped, and the install kit for around 60. Is it really 4 hours of labor for somebody who knows what they are doing?
Some people have told me to do a stall converter before/over gears? Any opinions on that?

540 is about the going rate for a gear plus proper installation. last time i bought synthetic rear end fluid it was $15 bux a qt.
you get what you pay for. it would suck if you paid someone 50 dollars less, then it made noise....

Saving money doesn't mean you are going to get less than satisfactory work done on your car.
If I went somewhere and they quoted me $400, and the rear end made noise, I wouldn't pay for it.
Any asshat can throw a ring a pinion in about an hour.....but I bet it wont be right!
We like to use this sayin around the shop....when getting your car worked on you have 3 choices...your allowed to pick 2. The 3 choices are: Fast (how long it takes to complete the job), Cheap (the price), Reliable (if it works correctly).
If you choose:
Fast and cheap....it probalby wont be reliable
Reliable and cheap....its gonna take longer to do the job
Reliable and fast.....your gonna pay
Get how it works? It seems when we have a customer in here questioning our prices (and other shops pricing) we explain it like this and they seem to understand.
Call us if your still interested in the gears.....and yes gears > stall.
