Default I need a little help with a valve-train noise.

So I finally finished doing the head swap on my car which currently consists of a typhoon intake, E303 cam, and now performer 60379 heads. Everything I've read says the performer 60379's use stock valve-train. Thats actually why I bought them...

Well I fired it up earlier and theres quite a bit of noise coming from what I assume is the valve train.

When I torqued the rockers they were almost all hitting at like 1.25 turns. So I got some shims and shimmed them so that they hit 18lbs in anywhere from a 1/2 to a little under a full turn. I'm using stock pushrods and stock rockers. From the posts I've read, I understand that if it hits after 1 turn you need shims and if it hits before, you need pushrod, correct? The heads and 24lb injectors were the only altercation I did, I was going from stock E7's with the exact same set-up and no noise at all.

The only other thing I could think of would be that maybe having the lifters full of oil prevented me from getting proper pre-load due to them hitting torque sooner instead of compressing a little?

Anyone in the Largo/Seminole area want to come and take a listen to it lol?

Are the rocker arms "riding" on the centers of the valve stems? If not you definitly have a pushrod mis match.

If you cant tell just by looking. try poping a few off (maybe all 4 corners of the engine)and use some white out on the valve stems to see where they are at. Put it back together and crank it, then see what it looks like. Should be across the center 1/3rd of the stem.

??????

Only a few minutes. They got slightly quieter after a min. I bumped the throttle once to twice to give it a little oil press. But they were still making some noise..

I did this initially on a couple on the pass. side but it was prior to shimming them. So I'm sure it has changed. I heard you're supposed to do that with a lifter converted to solid as well, or else your results will be inaccurate since the lifter will depressed as it is not being pumped full of oil, which is what the solid simulates?

Either way, before I shimmed it, those two cylinders were showing the the pushrod was a little long...which is what you want on pedestal as you can then compensate with the shims (since the effectively raise the rocker up some) to get correct pre-load.

When I put the 60379 heads on my car one of the old school things I did before throwing it all back together was pouring oil onto moving parts and some onto the lifters before I put the lower intake back on. Before I put the valve covers on I poured oil onto the roller rockers. My valvetrain was noisy from the start. I drove it a few miles nice and easy stopping in parking lots making sure there were no leaks. When I got back home I pulled the valve covers again and torqued the rocker bolts to spec. The noise went away gradually. I didn't use any shims whatsoever. This is the cam card to the cam I ran in my last car.

Coincidentally, last night I started tearing down my top end to put these heads back on until I ran into a little snag (forgot to buy a fuel line disconnect tool and A/C line disconnect). I still have the cam, too. It's got some scoring on it, but ran like a mofo when I got rid of the last car so I'm tossing it back in as is lining up the dots w/o degreeing it. Worked fine that way last time. Being that it's just a street car with D/D ability I'm not going radical with this car or engine.

Yup, they are progressively getting quieter. After I got off the phone with Shaun and had his reassurance I put it back together and fired it up. They were WAY quieter today than yesterday. I also poured oil on the moving parts when I put it back together. Car ran good on the 4 mile trip home (aside from a brake issue I'm having - but that was there before). Its a little finicky with the 24's and Pro-M...but liveable. I think that will straighten out after I do a base idle reset. Runs just as cool as it did before so far...

You can still hear them ticking with the hood open, but you kind of have to be listening for it. Nothing like before. Only other thing is that under slightly heavier throttle (not babying it, but not ripping on it - like if you pulled out on a U-turn and had to move a little quicker to get outta traffic) at about 2500 the exhaust note gets a little raspier - dont know if thats the valvetrain I'm hearing through....or just the extra power lol. I think I can hear a small exhaust leak from either the header-to-midpipe connection or midpipe-to-dump pipes connection.

Overall, I'm happy with how its acting right now. Sounds alot different, diff note and a little noticably louder. Its taking all of my self-control not to put my foot in it...
