Default 96 4.6 upgrade

I know NOTHING about MOD motor swaps. What Im working with is a 96 GT that has a bad motor in it. Is there any better (hp) or years to upgrade to that is an EASY swap. If so what is needed to complete the upgrade. i.e. Harness, computer ect. Not looking to make this a race car but something maybe an upgrade from whats in it. Also not looking to spend a bunch of money on it either.

If we do a motor change out, what is the years, models that would be a straight motor change out deal to be able to find a lower mile salvage motor.. Plug and play. Thanks TR

Upgrade to a 99 and up 4.6L....those came with the PI heads. And they will drop right in, only difference is the ignition, newer ones use a coil on plug while the older ones us coil packs.

If you really wanna make better hp numbers on a budget find a pre 99 4.6L block and put PI heads on it....A non PI block will make more hp with PI heads on it than a original PI block and head motor wiil. Its because of the compression ratio, you end up with a high compression ratio with a non PI block with PI heads.

I am sure hurstmeister will get on this one soon....seems anytime a swap question comes up he has a 5 page book on options on what works and what doesnt hahahahha....but I read them and they are usually full of good information.

+1 with the 99 and up motor. I think the timing cover might have a slightly different hole arrangement, but nothing you can't work with. Other than maybe 1 or 2 insignificant holes on the timing cover, it is a drop in replacement and 60hp upgrade.

Just rebuild your shortblock and put the PI heads on it. The Pre-99 cars had different pistons and it bumps the compression to like 10:1 or 10.5:1 or somewhere in that range. Put long tubes and an off road mid pipe on it with gears and its a solid mid-low 13 second ride.

Not an option, This motor was run WAY hot. We bought it knowing this. $300 with suspension mods, exhaust, and wheels.

Thanks to all that replied... looks like a 99 and newer would be the route. Does it need to be from a Mustang or is there other cars that are interchangeable Is this a drop in or is there any harness mods that I need to be aware of?

As far as pushrod and carb... thats the only way I roll. Just looking to get this running to flip it or just beat onfor a while
