Probably dont see many of my kind here but Ive got a V6 Explorer that I want to put a little speed into. I know I aint gonna burning sportsters or anything but I still like speed. Anybody out there got any recommendations about what I should do to my truck. Its a 1998 SOHC V6. K&N is designing a Generation 1 Air Filter for it right now but Im having trouble finding the best headers/exhaust and other parts. Feedback greatly appreciated.
I have a 1991 Explorer (13.57 sec @ 103.2 MPH; 512.5 BHP):

-PNWPE 245ci 4.0L V6
-BBK Instacharger & 66mm throttle body
-Volant Cold Air Induction
-Venom CNDS Nitrous System (200 shot)
-Complete Borla exhaust
-Ford 9 with 4.10
-Atlas II Transfer case

In 1998 Ford came out with the SOHC 4L which was used up to 2001. Some older-Explorer parts will convert up to the 2001 models. The same throttle body as mine from BBK (#1580) can be used on your X. Now for the superchager BBK (from website) made a supercharger for the X up to 1997 model. However truckperformance.com has a BBK supercharger kit for the 1998. So maybe its new and hasnt been put on BBKs website yet. Id give them a call first and see if that is compatible.

It took me forever to find Explorer stuff so im willing to help any Explorer foos. Some Explorer resource links:

The best years for Explorer parts are 97-00 so you are lucky. You also have the 5R55E transmission (Code D 1997+) 5-Speed automatic and All-wheel drive so I now hate you. But will still help you out since you are an Explorer person.

Here is some information on your 1998 SOHC V6 AWD Explorer:

For Towing:
4.0L SOHC with 3.55 has a 9000 Max GCRW 4500 Max Trailer Weight
4.0L SOHC with 3.73 has a 10000 Max GCRW 5640 Max Trailer Weight
4.0L SOHC with 4.10 has a 10000 Max GCRW 5640 Max Trailer Weight

Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is reduced 2% for every 1800 feet elevation. Towing a trailer over 2000 lbs requires a weight distributing hitch. GCWR is the maximum combined weight of towing vehicle including passengers cargo and the trailer.

4.0L V6 SOHC
205 horsepower
250 lbs of torque
4015 cc displacement
3.95 bore x 3.32 stroke
9.7:1 compression ratio

Your 0-60 time is 8.1 sec (factory). Your gas tank has a 20.8 gal capacity your front axle is a Dana 35 holding 3.5 pts of 80W90 axle lubricant rear axle is a Ford 8.8 holding 5.5 - 5.8 pts of 80W90 Axle Lubricant as well your AWD transfer case holds 1.3 quarts of Mercon ATF 2.7 quarts of Windshield Washer Fluid the cooling system holds 7.8 quarts of liquid and your oil with filter holds 5 qts of 5w30 oil. And always use 87 Octane Unleaded gasoline unless you have put in an aftermaket computer chip or youll get pinging and sluggish response even engine failure.

The V6 4.0L pushrod engines are all conventional 60° Vs with cast iron blocks and heads. The 4L V6 with a 3.95 bore x 3.32 stroke started as a 2.6L V6 with a 3.545 bore x 2.635 stroke. The block was just about maxed out at this point so the cylinders ended up pretty close together and the rods crowd the pan rail especially on the 97TM blocks. So thats its a good thing to have a 98.

Hope this helps you some. Have any questions just PM me.
