doing it once isnt going to get a bunch of air in the system, in fact the next time you press down it will push all of it out. I bet your friend pushed too far on the pedal and hurt the seal and its just bypassing it all. Most ppl dont know you arent supposed to press the pedal all the way down when bleeding, only an inch or two at most.
