Default problems with 88 5.0 need help

well here it goes. the starter went bad on it i believe. yesterday the car wouldnt start but just try and crank. we had jumpers up to the battery too. well eventually we said fuck it and i turned the ignition off and took out the key. to my surprise tho the car kept trying to crank itself. it did this for a couple seconds and then it started to smoke were the starter is. we disconected the battery so it wouldnt try that again. there was a very nasty burning smell. well today i put the stang on a jack and replaced the starter and the starter solenoid. the car didnt crank at all. the head lights didnt even come on. we tried to jump it and nothing. my friend then tried to jump it by the starter solenoid and there was spark and the motor tried to crank but nothing. i tried to start it with the key and nothing at all. not even an attempt to crank. so basically the car tries to start when you jump it through the starter solenoid but nothing when you try with the key. so anybody have these problems b4 or have any thoughts on what it might be. im new to the domestic scene and dont know too much.

i had the same problem, one of the fusible links is bad, or the car has a bad ground, check to see if the neg battery cable is loose at the block behind the ac bracket. if its clean and tight, make sure you have the short ground going from the negative on the battery to the chassis behind the battery up on the fenderwell. if it still doesnt work you have a bad fusible link

its definatley not the solenoid. i just got it. so even with a bad connection why would it not start from the inside but only try to start when i try and jump it through the solenoid. and yes the fuel pump turns on

you forgot to hook a wire up, there should be two small studs sticking out on the solenoid. there also is a red wire with a right angle rubber boot thingy on it. it goes on one of the studs.

yeah it does, sounds like a burnt up ignition switch. not the lock cylinder.
