problems with 88 5.0 need help

try using another battery? had something a long time happen that was similar. the battery was so far gone that jumping it was giving it enough juice.

a fusable link too.

Hey dude igniton swith is on the bottom left side of the steering column the wire from the starter solenoid runs through the igniton switch and to the wire from the lock cylinder. As far as the motor still trying to crank it burnt the switch closed then shorted out. Try the igniton switch is the best place to start. if u need anymore help pm me.

since the headlights are also not working I would say it would have to be a fusible link

It sounds like the ignition switch like Mike said.
Ford had a recall on them for burning up inside. The switch is only about 15.00 at any Ford dealer and they usually have them instock.
