A good but rare block is the 302 Boss block, it had factory 4-bolt mains and lots of nickel but they are hard to find and when you do most have been bored out, trust must I found out first hand.

As far as the older blocks vs. the new R blocks I purchased well here is a good comparison for you. I just wish I would have taken some side photos and a few with the blocks a little closer but this should give you a good idea. Not to mention the R's are four bolt mains.

Just the reply/response i was looking for , thanks scott. I do remmber reading about the Boss 302 blocks back in my younger years more clearly now. The boss 302 had some other diffrences aside from the block/bottom end that set it apart from all other production parts as well. I believe the cylinder heads where a very nice piece (2.195" Intake / 1.714" Exhaust as well as some huge intake/exhaust ports). Also debuted the boss/closed combustion chamber design engine hadsomewhere around a 11:1 -11.5:1 compression ratio ,supposedly used solid lifters,(had a hotter camshaft then other production 302's had). Had a stock redline of about 7k rpms (have read that it isn't difficult to get this sucker to revv to 8k rpms though). Definetely one of the better engines the american auto industry produced , back when american's actually took pride in what they built.

Yes...another difference is that ALL Boss blocks come with screw in freeze plugs.
