Why does T-stat leak?

Question Why does T-stat leak?

When I dont run a T-stat the housing doesnt leak but when I put a thermostat in there it does....any ideas??

yes on both...used gasket and RTV. If i take out the themostat and use new gasket and RTV it doesnt leak.

the thermostat housing has and identation for the t-stat to sit inside. if your not careful it will slip out and pinch between the intake and the water neck.

only on a 302. on the 351 it is much easier to get at.

it is better than chevys engineering masterpiece of having the distributor at the wrong end of the motor so that it is hidden behind everything.

I rtv it to the housing first then when its pretty dry I rtv the other side and bolt it down...never had one leak

+1 on indentation.
I used rtv on the inlet and placed the thermo in there and then after a few minutes put it on the car with the gasket. no leaks as of yet-probably will now though....
