not sure what you're referring to as a "compression ratio tool". There isn't any device (that I know of) that would take into consideration all of the variables (cam lift, durration, etc) that would allow a plug and play type setup..

please explain..
compression tool? i never said that. i know there is a formula for figuring out your CR. i just dont know the formula. it is a combination of bore, stroke, gasket bore, clearance volume gasket volume, head volume, piston top land diameter, crank throw, cylinder volume etc. can think of the rest off the top off my head. but there is a mathematical formula to give you exact CR. that is what i am asking

I was responding to racintheburg..
I'm sure you can find the formula on the web, or if you have the specs (combustion chamber volume, etc) i'm sure any shop could help you out.

I wasn't saying that the link ??? sent over wouldn't work. Hell, we use one similar to it at work when we are starting to figure out an engine combination. I was stating that a normal, run-of-the-mill "compression tester" won't tell nasdstang what he wanted to know. The example of how I said to figure it out was just the most accurate, that's all.

Well I didnt mean to come off like an ass....But what is compression? (question yourself this) Its measured in cc's? CC= combustion chamber CR= Compression Ratio

Wouldnt you rather measure the actual compression or pressure of what the motor pushes out?

Keep in mind you have some ring leak in most motors , There for the liquid to me would be less truthful then the actual compression of what the motor is puching out int a gauge...

Please leave a reply joe if Maybe my understanding is wrong...

Compression Ratio
The relationship of cylinder volumes with the piston at TDC and at BDC.

Compression Test
To check of the compression developed in each engine cylinder and is a means of determining engine condition.

Compression ratio is the total volume of the combustion chamber above the piston at the bottom of its travel (BDC), divided by the volume of the combustion chamber above the piston at top dead center (TDC).

Basically all a compression test tells you is the amount of pressure produced in the cylinder by the compression stroke.

See what I'm saying?

<---- so lost

are you saying you use a Compression gauge find out if your motor is 9 to 1 or 13 to 1

not sure that you could explain it any clearer than what Joe stated but...

a compression tester will only tell you the PRESSURE that is being built up in each cylinder. .for example if you were to test each cylinder with a compression tester and it looked like this:
1 - 80psi
2 - 75psi
3 - 82psi
4 - 40psi
5 - 77psi
6 - 76psi
7 - 74psi
8 - 73psi

that would only tell me that something is wrong with cylinder 4 (rings going bad, bent valve, etc).. and I would need to investigate further..
