86 gt engines had flat tops and they are forged. e7's are 87-95 mustang heads. the 86's had e6'd and they are not good for performance. the reliefs were in all 87-93 mustang ho's. 93-95 pistons are hyperutectic.

 

sounds to me like the engine has been rebuit with different stuff, if its stamped e7te on the block, it should have valve releifs......


i beleive the forged pistons say TRW right on the top of them as well.......

Thanks on all the info guys,I guess he'll have to learn his lesson on taking someone's word on parts,or maybe the guy didn't know.Anyway,we'll just have to order some forged pistons for it,and so the bill starts to rise

 

That is only with the aftermarket replacements. The originals had TRW cast on the inside of the pistons as seen here. The is a forged 1987 - 1992 piston.


As mentioned, the 1986 pistons are also forged. They just do not have valve reliefs in them. Underneath one of the intake ports of the cylinder heads you should see the four digit casting numbers. If the heads are bolted to the block then you'll need a mirror. Original 1985 H.O. pistons are also forged with valve reliefs.

I'll be contacting the seller shortly here, we got the entire block ripped apart. Its a Y block....don't know what much else to say aout identifying it.

 

You betchya. Anyways, contacted the seller, and they're being helpful about it - who knows, I guess everything works at least - crank has a few minor notch marks in it, haven't mic'd it yet, but at this point with all the parts that just don't fit right, I'm satisfied in saying, "Its not an 89 Mustang motor"
