ignition switch solenoid troubles
HEy have a 87 mustang, well i have replaced the ignition swith solenoid the lil black thing in the fender,i am not sure the name of it,well this year so far i replaced that part 3 times, the starter is a year old, evrytime when i go start the car, the starter stays on,so i disconect the battery and give the solenoid a few taps, then i start it again and the starter wont stick, now sometimes it will do this, but lately its been doing it evryday now.i replaced the battery cable goin to the solenoid cause it was old and coroded,it did not do it for a day and today it did it 3 times in a row, could the solenoid gone bad again,or has anyone experienced this before?????or any ideas what may cause the starter to keep goin after u let go of the key,now i have not replaced the power wire goin to the starter or the negative cable from the battery, but before i do i tought i ask u guys, see if ya have any ideas.....of what is causing this.....thanks in advance
I went through a bout of that with my last notchback. Tried about 3 starters and the same number of solenoids. The problem turned out to be the solenoid. I kept buying the new solenoids at Autozone and Discount and they would work for about a week and then back to sticking. I finally bought one from Ford and the problems went away. I took the dead ones apart and found that the contacts were welding themselves closed. That's why the starter would run on. Sounds like that might be what yours is doing if it will work again for a while after you tap on it.

Yeah same here, bought about 3 solenoids, and then finally stepped up to an OEM FORD peice, no problems since.

thanks man,i tought i would have to buy the oem part,i remember reading the box and it said mad ein china, then thats when i realise maybe the parts might be too sheap, well you remember how much was it from ford??
$12,500
No, I don't remember. But it was more than I wanted to pay...at first.
Go to Cophers and pull one off a junker if you feel like you've paid enough already for this little problem. Couldn't be worse than the Chinese one and is probably just fine. Just make sure it's a Ford one. I hate spending money on something to just get the car to run. Gofast parts are a different story.

gofast parts are a diferent story......thats true......,yeap mine is doing what yours did,i tap it and it will work fine for like 2 to 3 starts n it will stick, damn it i should of kept the original one,i changed it just for the hell of it,n after a week and went bad n all hell broke loose since, well i will call ford or order it thru were i work at i get a discount here,i think i have spent more then anough for this stupid lil chinese parts.....thanks lots guys
That's why I don't believe in preventive maintenance. I usually wait until the suspect part falls off in the middle of the road. Then I can walk back ans see exactly what it was that was making the funny noise and replace it.
