Default Just bought an '87 GT- needs work!

The other day....new clean 302...however, needs a LOT of interior work. I have the power door actuators but they need to be installed. Speedometer is broken,,,,odometer doesnt work...neither does the gas gauge. The whole lens for that dash area has been removed and needs another. All I really care about is getting the speedometer fixed. He says all it needs is a teflon piece of some sort but I stil haven't found anyone that knows how to do that. Any advice/help offerred would be much appreciated. I'm up in NC now but wil be back home in Tampa in a day or so. Thanks a lot!

PS: It's the convertible model also (any ideas on how to patch a small tear?

Congrats on the new Mustang. Try replacing the speedo cable first. This is most likely the problem with the speedo, but if it doesn't solve the problem chances are the car needs a new one anyways.

The fuel gauges have a tendency to stick and malfunction when they get older. Not entirely sure what the fix is for this. Instead of tearing your hair out trying to fix the problem, you may want to just find a newer gauge cluster with properly functioning gauges. We replaced my '87 cluster with one out of an '89 GT...fixed my fuel gauge problem and got rid of the lame 85mph LX speedo.

Depending on the size and placement of the tear on the top, you may be able to find an interior or convertable shop to fix it for you. Usually if it is on one of the supporting ribs of the top it cannot be repaired because the constant expansion of the material when the top is lowered/raised will just tear the patch. Black duct tape also works well as a temporary fix until you can save up for a new top.

thanks I appreciate the feedback. I'll be posting pictures as soon as I can get ahold of my buddy's digital. For now...the tear hasn't seen to grown any bigger so I'll go with the black duct tape as long as I can haha --- I don't have much money to spend on this car. UNLESS I get another job real soon.

PS: Many mods were performed before I bought the car,

They are as follows:

75 mm throttle body
24 lb injectors
adjustable fuel pressure regulator
roller rockers
(shorty ??) headers

That's a whole lot of injector/throttle body for a nearly stock mustang ... how does it run?

yeah my friend said something about a possible cam job...i don't know much about mustangs but I'm learning. There may be some other work that I don't know about but I don't know if I would call it "stock" persay.... it runs rich..a lot of smell coming from the exhaust and the engine knocks when I get in the higher RPMs...but that may be because I ran 87 octane in it a couple times on the way up north .... the guy who sold it to me told me to change the oil with synthetic..that he used the racing synthetic... i always used 20/50 in my DSM (which I still have)..so I don't know how the synthetic will be good for the mustang..just gonna take his word for it I guess.

also- my friend told me that going back to a stock throttle body wil help me with gas mileage and the car from shaking/rumbling while it idles...however I'd lose some horses

Yea, too big of a throttle body could do that.

I have a stock 60mm throttle body and an explorer 65mm throttle body. I was selling them both for $50 if your interested. The explorer throttle body just needs the linkage from the stock 60mm throttle body to bolt right up.

for the gas guage not working, the fuel floater could very well be stuck.

i just replaced mine, and they are seperate peices from the fuel pump. get that and the metal ring that holds pressure on it, along with a new rubber grommet where the filler neck enters the gas tank, mine was dry rotted and cracked.

all in all it took about 45 minutes to do at most. but that was at my work with a lift.

and i know for a fact BMW's come with knock sensors for when people run low octane gas in them, which causes pinging and a knock somtimes. could be the same thing, im not sure
