alternator question
alright,
i have the 94 95 alternator in my 91. ive had it in for about a year, and it was brand new.
teh only problem is i got it through walt at real speed parts, and i cant get him to return any phone calls, go figure
anyways, alt took a shit today. now, my question is,
should i just replace the voltage regulator on the back of it, or put in a whole new unit?
anyone else have this problem? i am thinking it would be cheaper to do the regulator first, then test it at work, then if it doesnt do anything, replace the whole alternator itself.
it was doing 42 amps max, when its a 130 amp max. not up to snuff. battery is fine.
im just so glad it had enough to coast to work today so i could test it!
let me know what you guys think

Its tough to say what the problem is. If you swap the regulator and that wasn't it, then you're out even more money. Take the alternator to a parts store and have them test it. You're even better off taking to an automotive electrical specialist like J. Elmer Dykes on Hillsborough near the Chevy dealer or the other one at Waters and I-275. I've dealt with both (with 3G alternators as a matter of fact) and they know their shit.
