my 90 LX 5.0 hatchback ran a 10.2 bone stock(air silencer and all) with the stock AOD in not so good shape...i added 4.10 gears, off rd h-pipe,removed my front sway bar and rebuilt my posi and went 9.2 with that same AOD, its funny cuz everyone says the 5spd r soooooooooo much faster...but i never lost to bad to 5spd mustangs. if it has low miles..add a trans cooler to help preserve the auto u have unless u plan on swappin it out..i swapped mine out for a built C4(3 spd auto) trans with a manual VB. i like the C4, its a good trans, shifts very hard and can take ALOT of abuse...the only down fall with the 4.10s and 3 spd with no OD is about 9mpg lol..its all part of the game tho...cant go fast and have good gas milage...unfortunatly i have bad gas milage and im still slow hehe. u can hit me up on AIM if u have any questions AIMisGOOP is my aim name. also for first mods..DEFINATLY do gears...itll wake ur car up so much...and if the posi isnt working..have it rebuilt..Dragin on the board here does it..its not to expensive, i think like $150 or so, and itll help alot more then most would think. it took over 2/10ths off my 1/8th mile time.

**EDIT**

this is SlowLX5.0, i didnt realize my brother was logged in.

i ran 9.5 bone stock with 2.73s and a 5spd at sunshine, 2.2 60ft time along with that. I've added quite a few bolt ons since which I won't bother to name . 3.73s and nittos should get me into the 8s.

I've heard of really fast aod stangs that are very durable, but I've also heard of horror stories with the t5. If I was you I'd keep the AOD. Put some 3.73s in it, shift kit, tranny cooler. If that car has a descent amount of miles and is taken care of, you should be fine until you start making serious power.

Yikes. That is some pretty high mileage on the motor to even think about putting a blower to it. The GT-40 long block is a nice budget-minded motor when the time comes.

I had an '87 5.0l with the AOD. It was great when the AOD functioned properly (usually right after the twice a year rebuild). If I could do it all over again, I would have swapped to a TKO or 3550. The AOD is such a piece of shit transmission. But if you are dead set on keeping an auto, go with the C-4. Then again, my views with the AOD are pretty jaded so you probably shouldn't listen to me.

My fuel guage had the same problem, as do many Fox bodies. Easiest thing is to swap it out for a newer cluster. This will give you a functioning fuel guage and a speedo that goes over 85mph.

Good luck with the project.

If your gonna keep the AOD I would put some thought into a set of 4.10's over the 3.73's.

Hell, even with a 5-speed I would install a set of 4.10's.

Who am I kidding........I'd run a minimum of 4.30's.

Crazy

I would have went with 4.10s if it was totally up to me (parents only let me go 3.23, so I told the guy to put 3.73s in ) .

It's to my understanding however that the AOD's have a Lower (numerically higher) first gear ratio and a higher (numerically lower) over drive ratio. If that car doesn't see usual highway duty, go with the 4.10's!

Gears are the biggest bang for the buck on a stock stang, it really wakes them up. Don't fear the gear, however, 4.30 might put you into overdrive in the 1/4 mile, that's not good.

For the guage cluster try Mustang Parts Specialties (www.stangparts.com). If they don't have what you need listed on the website, you can usually give them a call and they will find it for you.

As long as the surging thing doesn't continue after the car warms up, I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

though for me, you'd have to change it to 10 inches, and you'd have to change inches to millimeters, and you'd have to change 10 to 5 and you'd have to change dick to poor excuse for one.
