Your problem is a dirty IAC ... take it off and spray it with some carb cleaner a few times, let it dry or blow out the excess with a compressor. Its a very common issue, very easy to correct. That mechanic blew smoke up your ass unfortunatly. Its about a 10-15 min job total.

I have a BBK O/R H with Magnaflows. They are very loud. I was going to take them off but I'm beginning to like them. At WOT they sound awesome.
