I think only "car people" know about the one-year of recalls. Most people I talk to had no idea the Focus had so many recalls.
I doubt the Escort had a flawless first model year. The only problematic year for the Focus was in late 1999 and 2000 during the first model year. By 2001-2002 the recalls were cut to less than half, and from 2003-present the Focus line has had zero recalls (with the exception of the SVT, which still has issues in 2003).
From my experiences in talking with people (fellow Foci owners in particular), most could care less about the recall history of an automobile. Recalls are always fixed for free regardless of warranty. Car owners seem to be more concerned about long term durability and reliability of a car. Granted, recalls may take away from perceived reliability of an automobile...but a great majority of the time, recalls are performed during a standard checkup at the dealership before a reliability problem even occurs. So most people aren't even inconvenienced by getting the recall serviced.
I guess it sounds like I'm an "Escort hater"...but I'm trying to shed light on a subject on something I have experienced over the past 3-years. Driving my car has been an interesting love/hate experience.

2. Your car doesn't have the same motor/tranny as the ZX3. The only motor option available for the former 4-door Escort is the BASE MODEL motor for the 4-door Focus and isn't available in any other Focus model. The ancient motor is in fact being taken out of the Focus line-up in the next year or so.
3. The Focus is a much more refined automobile compared to the dated Escort. Focus has received rave reviews from probably 99% of automobile critics since it hit the US in late '99. When was the last time the Escort made Car-and-Drivers top 10? Probably 1972.
4. Don't you find it amusing Ford decided to drop the Escort name all together? They did that for a reason.

Nope, the zx2 engine/tranny is the optional focii bigger motor per se. But oh wait, that's an escort too....

Ford Focus ZX5
This car gets nearly universal agreement on one point: The front seats are torture. Ford has done a thorough job of it, complete with a dial-a-pain crank down low at the front, allowing you to tune in that backache just the way you like it. For the seat alone, some of us would veto a Focus purchase. And what's with the swing-up center armrest? When up, it bangs the elbow, and when down, it blocks the forearm reaching for the numb shifter. This car is alone in the group in providing a telescoping column (although all of them tilt), but the effort to toggle the control is absurdly high. Officially, the Focus scores lowest for driver comfort.
Highs: The imaginatively carved exterior, the grinning plumpness of the leather-wrapped wheel, and a telescoping column perfect for Stirling Moss reenactments.
Lows: Marquis de Sade designer-edition front buckets, zigzag dartiness of the steering, the clopping 50-series Firestones that hate this car.
The Verdict: Less here than meets the eye.

That's what people look at when they see this car and obviously not 99% of all reviews are good if C&D still says they are not very appealing.... =/

Hmmmm...thats funny. The Ford Focus made Car and Driver's Top 10 Best 3-years in a row. Enjoy the links:
January 2000
January 2001
January 2002
Funny, over the 20-year time period Car and Driver has been doing the 10Best award, the Escort never made the cut.
