Finally a thread worth posting in. I've been gone for way too long lol. Oh where to begin....
They respond to cams great, and turbos even better. Look at what little 5.3s with Z06 or even 6.0 truck cams are doing with just a MP76. Heck, look at what some are doing with just 5.3s and MS3 or MS4 cams and a carb. Stock for stock the whole platform is just better. Look at stock LS3/L92 heads, 320CFM out of the box. That's BB flow numbers gentlemen.
Now I like and have much respect for Fords sb windsors but, there certainly not my first pick when I think of an engine I wanna put in my coupe.
In stock form I believe the LS based motors are a better motor for hp as they repond to cams unreal, unlike the 351's that also need good heads such as P heads or good aftermarket heads. LS1 heads, the older junk castings flow almost 270-280 in stock form and then with some CNC work 243 castings will flow over 300 cfm. Its hard pressed to find a good set of Ford aftermarket heads that will flow over 300 cfm.

Here I am Harold.
I dont post very much because I am on the road most of the time. I get on the net for a few mins between loads to check emails, forum posts and such. But really dont have the time like I used to. That and no one here to really argue with and not have things blow up out of proportion.
I think the lure of the LSx motors (At least for me) has more to do with affordability, availability, and the currently available aftermarket support for these motors.
I have nothing against the 302 or 351. I am personally bored with the 302. We know the limitations, the HP numbers, there is nothing left to argue. The 351 is still a great base from which to build a motor. But good blocks will become harder to find and as a result prices will go up.
The LSx motors are making decent numbers in stock form. You can see another 75 - 100 hp from just cam and headers provided you have a supporting valve train. The simplicity and cost is what made me go the LSx route. Be realistic,.. how much money (From scratch) does it take to get a 351 to put down an honest 400 rwhp? How much to get an LS1 or LQ4/9 to do the same? LQ4/9 is probably the most cost effective way to see an honest 400 rwhp right now.
An LS1 with cam and headers only will best anything you can do with an iron headed 302 in NA form. Apples and oranges sure. But this is the argument Harold asked for.
