My dad has sleep apnea, and that isn't what you have. That's when you stop breathing while you're sleeping. It's a pretty scary thing, my dad used to have real bad fits of it, where he would hack a couple times, and just go dead silent, start gasping a bit 15-20 seconds later, and be fine afterwords.

a few bong hits always works for me. My wife took ambien for a while , and she would sleep walk and clear out the fridge.There would be wrappers on the floor next to the bed in the morning and she would have no idea how the got there

Beat me to it.... Yeah, Sleep Apnea is not the INABILITY to fall asleep as stated by mikiemike, you might want to see another doctor. What 302GTS said is correct, yoru brain falls asleep so deeply, it forgets to tell you to take a breath while sleeping. I know this especially because I have Sleep Apnea. It happens occasionally, but I do know when it happens.

Since I've been laid off I havent been able to keep a regular sleep schedule. And actually sleep less now then I did when I was working my ass off 60 hrs a week.

I think my problem is stress related. Even if I get up at 6 or 7 am with only 2 - 3 hours of sleep,.. I'll still find myself sitting here at the computer till 3 or 4 am unable to get sleepy and roll into bed. Even if I lay in bed and try to sleep I'll just lay there tossing and turning for hours feeling miserable. My mind just wont shut down. So I feel your pain.

First, try working out in the middle of the day. Get a good exersize going at least 6 hours before you want to go to sleep. If that doesn't work, then

Try smoking a bowl of some mid-grade pot about 30-45 minutes before you plan to go to sleep. That'll also give you the munchies and you'll put some food into your stomach which will help you sleep. If that doesn't work or you have a pot hangover the next morning, then

Go pick up some Melatonin pills. This is what your body naturally produces to get you to go to sleep. Try them every once in a while. Do not use them all the time as it will reduce your body's ability to naturally manufacture Melatonin. If that doesn't work, then

Go see a doctor. Not only a regular MD, but also psychiatrist. Seriously, you'd be amazed what kind of wacked out repressed issues could be affecting you in ways you never thought of. I know I get performance anxiety all the time as evidenced by whats in my dreams, and it completely screws with me and makes it hard to fall asleep because I'm always worrying about the day.

believe it or not pot makes me paraniod and my mind really races!!! And driving, for get about it!

Melatonin- my father-n-law suggested this also....he a natural herb and vitamin believer, but I havent picked any up yet

Pschyotrist- My job is really stressful and I work comission on top of that. I'm going to try the Melatonin before I go all out and see a doctor...no insurance sux ballz

Or, you could work on your project But seriously. Go make a nice turkey sandwhich.... Natural enzymes in turkey makes you sleep. Melatonin can mess you up. If you use it too much.... be carefull with that shiz

I sleep 2-3 hrs a night, and then i get up and just hang out. and work at night lol.

+2 on the 420. Go for some zanax bro. you won't need to take them all the time. They definately take your mind off things.
