Similar story here: Cop pulled me over. I had my wife and two kids in the car. He walked up and asked me why I was putting my seat belt on when he pulled me over. (I had put my belt on before starting the car 15 miles before hand) I told him "I put my seatbelt on before I started my car in Spring Hill...This is Brooksville...I hope you didn't have your lights on this whole way." He asked for my license and registration. I gave it to him. He wrote me a ticket for speeding, which I fought in court and beat in court. As he handed me the ticket, I asked him why he had asked me about my seatbelt. He said that his back up (in a second car behind his) told him I was putting it on when he was pulling me over. Then I asked him if he always listened to hearsay and acted on it. He simply said "Have a nice day sir.". Then I beat his ASS in court. LOL

Oh, and I always wear my seatbelt....But I don't want to be TOLD to put it on or else. It is my CHOICE to live or die by wearing or not wearing my seatbelt.

I agree it should be a choice to whether or not someone should wear a seatbelt. I ALWAYS wear mine, no matter what the circumstances are. For the cop to issue me a ticket when I know damn well I always wear my belt, well this just gave me even less faith in our governmental system. Which might I add was already at an all-time low.

Default My 2 cents

I consider myself lucky enough to have learned to wear my seat belt without having to get a ticket or break my neck.

One rainy morning about 10 years ago, I was sitting at a light west bound on 60. I was on my way to work about 6:30 am. Out of now where kaboom! My Honda had no chance against the heavy Chevy with failed brakes - hit me dead square in the rear bumper maybe going 30 MPH. The impact knocked me through the intersection with exiting south bound traffic from I-75. This is my first bit of luck; that no cars were coming through that intersection at that instant and hit me from the side. My car rolled probably 60, 80 feet I'm guessing.

The guy that hit me was genuine in his apologies. I mean his car malfunctioned. I'm thankful that I was 'awake' at the scene to talk to him. My car was totaled.

The impact knocked my radio out of the dash, broke a rope chain off my neck - not at the clasp but through a link, and broke my seat. To me, it was clear, if I had not had my seat belt on - I would have hit the ceiling of the car and been in bad shape, real bad. Now I started driving in 1985 when you did not have to wear seat belts. In fact I think one car I owned, the seat belts did not work. So I thought I would never form the habit of wearing a seat belt, I'm lucky I was able to change; second bit of luck. I had some soreness for a few months and my neck was strained but not like what could have happened if I was not wearing my seat belt.

I don't know about officers walking around at a stop light and giving tickets, it maybe good or it maybe wrong. But I know this, protect yourself, don't let tricky laws do it, don't let others do it. You cant control what else is happening in traffic. Especially now a days with more people distracted while driving text messaging and what-not.

BUCKLE UP - I'm thankful I've had all my faculties for the last 10 years.

I'm gonna go to that intersection in my 65 mustang and not wear my seatbelt and laugh when they issue me a ticket for no seatbelt.

Florida Seat Belt Laws

The law states that the front seat passengers must wear seat belts. This law applies to any car manufactured since 1968.
I can do it in my 67 mustang too. YIPPIE! Old cars FTW!

Oh, and the reason it only applies to vehicles manufactured AFTER 1968, is because that was when the feds mandated that ALL motor vehicles be equipped with safety belts. So my 65 and my 67 are exempt because they were not REQUIRED to have them. Also, my 1953 F-250.....Which only had them because I put them in there.

Anyone wanna take bets on how long it takes for a judge to throw it out of court and still fine me?

good friend of mine died because she WAS wearing a seatbelt, cut her neck she bled to death. So I hate seat belts that ride right on my neck but guess what folks, I still wear it.
